According to the New York Post, 34-year-old Gregory Echevarria was operating the crane at a construction site near Broome Street in Manhattan around 3:15 a.m. when the counterweight dropped and crushed him to death. One construction worker said that Echevarria was “split in half” when the massive object dropped on him. “I didn’t see it, but I heard he was split in half. You are talking about 15, 000-16, 000 pounds, ” The incident is being investigated by the Department of Buildings who reportedly put an order to take apart the crane and have it removed from the construction site. However, the Department of Buildings reported that there were no safety issues from Wednesday’s inspection.
